Whether you're considering buying land in North Texas or simply curious about property sizes, you've likely asked, "How big is an acre?" The answer is simple: an acre is 43,560 square feet—about the size of a football field minus the end zones.
Picture an acre as a square about 208.7 feet on each side. But keep in mind, land parcels rarely come in perfect squares—they vary in shape depending on zoning, topography, and intended use.
Commercial Acre:
Used in real estate to describe plots for commercial development, typically 30,000–40,000 square feet, depending on zoning.
These terms are not standardized, so always verify measurements with a land survey.
To calculate acreage:
Example: A lot is 200 ft by 217.8 ft.
200 × 217.8 = 43,560 sq ft ÷ 43,560 = 1 acre.
For irregular shapes, break the land into smaller geometric shapes, calculate their areas, and sum them. Use tools like a measuring wheel or GPS-based apps for accuracy.
An acre is part of the Public Land Survey System (PLSS):
The average cost of an acre in the U.S. is $17,500, but prices vary: (as of 05/2025)
