How Big Is an Acre of Land?

Brent Wells May 6, 2025

Whether you're considering buying land in North Texas or simply curious about property sizes, you've likely asked, "How big is an acre?" The answer is simple: an acre is 43,560 square feet—about the size of a football field minus the end zones.

Visualizing an Acre

Picture an acre as a square about 208.7 feet on each side. But keep in mind, land parcels rarely come in perfect squares—they vary in shape depending on zoning, topography, and intended use.

Acre Variations: Builder’s and Commercial Acres

  • Builder’s Acre: A colloquial term in the construction industry, roughly 40,000 square feet, created to simplify calculations but not widely adopted due to confusion.
  • Commercial Acre:

Used in real estate to describe plots for commercial development, typically 30,000–40,000 square feet, depending on zoning.
These terms are not standardized, so always verify measurements with a land survey.

How to Measure an Acre

To calculate acreage:

  1. Measure the length and width of the land in feet.
  2. Multiply length by width to get square feet.
  3. Divide by 43,560 to convert to acres.

Example: A lot is 200 ft by 217.8 ft.

200 × 217.8 = 43,560 sq ft ÷ 43,560 = 1 acre.

For irregular shapes, break the land into smaller geometric shapes, calculate their areas, and sum them. Use tools like a measuring wheel or GPS-based apps for accuracy.

Acre in Context: Larger Land Units

An acre is part of the Public Land Survey System (PLSS):

  • Section: 1 square mile = 640 acres.
  • Quarter Section: 160 acres.
  • Half Section: 320 acres.

Cost of an Acre

The average cost of an acre in the U.S. is $17,500, but prices vary: (as of 05/2025)

  • Wyoming: $136,000 (cheapest).
  • Celina, TX: $300,000 (average) up to $800,000 in a great neighborhood.

*Factors like location, zoning, and utilities impact value.
